Anaktuvuk Pass

Anaktuvuk Pass is located in the central Brooks Range. The village is nearly equidistant to Barrow and Fairbanks. Anaktuvuk Pass is surrounded by tall mountains and is located in the Gates of the Arctic National Parks and Preserve.

Anaktuvuk Pass is situated on a migratory caribou route. It is the permanent settlement of the Nunamiut, the ancestral nomadic Iñupiat of the region. During the early 1900s the Nunamiut left the Brooks Range mostly due to the collapse of the caribou population. By the 1940s, several Nunamiut families returned to the area and settled at Anaktuvuk Pass.

Anaktuvuk Pass is home to the Simon Paneak Memorial Museum. This museum features the cultural history of the area, it also displays the traditional clothing, and nomadic tools used around the time of the first contact with Westerners.

Nunamuit Corporation is the Village Corporation established pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Act of 1971. Nunamuit Corporation owns approximately 92,000 acres of surface lands in and around the community.
