ASRC Publishes Fact Sheets on ANWR Oil and Gas Development

In recent weeks, there has been an increasingly renewed interest in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), as legislation calling to open a section of ANWR for oil and natural gas development has been circulating through Congress. The bill was proposed by Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), pursuant to instructions in the budget resolution for fiscal year 2018, which tasks lawmakers with creating legislation to raise $1 billion over the next 10 years.  The area currently under negotiation to be opened for development – known as the 1002 Area – is only eight percent of ANWR’s total acreage. Within the 1002 Area, proposed legislation would allow for just 2,000 acres of surface development, roughly 1/5 the size of Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
To provide more in-depth information on the topic, ASRC has published two informational documents on ANWR. Below you will find fact sheets with background information on the ANWR area and ASRC, as well as a brochure detailing facts and figures on ANWR, Alaskan oil and gas development, and the views of Alaska Natives who live in the region.
