Sweeney is the most qualified candidate to represent Alaska
Utqiaġvik, AK – The Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) board of directors voted unanimously to endorse Tara Katuk MacLean Sweeney, who recently announced her candidacy, for the upcoming special election for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Tara has proven her leadership capabilities both in Alaska and in Washington, D.C. Her professional background sets her apart from the other candidates,” said Crawford Patkotak, ASRC board chairman. “We are proud to endorse Tara, a fellow Iñupiaq, for Alaska’s one U.S. House of Representatives seat.”
“Tara is uniquely qualified to fight for all Alaskans, she has experience working in and with the urban and rural areas of our expansive state,” added Rex A. Rock Sr., ASRC president and CEO. “Her devotion to Alaska and the Alaska Native community is without question. Tara has the vision and work ethic to effectively represent and deliver results for all Alaska.”
Sweeney is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2022 special election to fill the seat held by Representative Don Young for the last forty-nine years. Sweeney previously served as the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of Interior, the first Alaska Native and the second woman to be confirmed for the position. She’s served in leadership positions for the Alaska Federation of Natives, the Arctic Economic Council and ASRC.
The special election primary will be held on June 11, 2022. It will be the first statewide election held by mail-in ballot and will be the first election under the ranked-choice voting system.
