We are deeply saddened by the passing of James “Jimmy” Stotts, whose decades of leadership helped our communities meaningfully advocate for the Inuit right to self-determination and the protection of our lands, culture, economy, and way of life. Our prayers are with Jimmy’s wife Karoline, his children, grandchildren, and loved ones.
Born in Utqiaġvik in 1947, Jimmy saw first-hand the rapid changes and challenges faced by our communities as the outside became increasingly interested in Inuit homelands across the circumpolar Arctic. Jimmy dedicated his life to building unity among Inuit and defending Inuit self-determination and sovereignty. From participating on the first executive council of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) to later serving as President of ICC Alaska, Jimmy ensured our people’s voices were heard and respected on the global stage.
“Jimmy’s commitment to serving our people and our communities extended far beyond the North Slope,” said Rex A. Rock Sr., ASRC President and CEO. “His decades-long service to Inuit through his work at ICC ensured our people, our culture, our perspectives, and our priorities were foundational in discussions and decisions about the Arctic. As one of our early leaders, we aim to live up to the example Jimmy set for us.”
Jimmy’s enduring legacy touched many aspects of Inuit life. His leadership in advancing the economic self-determination rights of Inuit was felt at the local and international levels. From his work at ASRC and other North Slope entities, to his advocacy at ICC through initiatives like the ICC Economic Summit, Jimmy’s dedication to our people strengthened Inuit representation and progressed economic opportunities for Inuit.
